Outkast - B.O.B./ Ms. Jackson (DVD Single)

Author: Music Lover  //  Category: Music Videos on DVD

On the strength of the surrealistic, irreverent videos for “B.O.B.” and “Ms. Jackson,” from the multiplatinum Stankonia (2000), it isn’t hard to see why these Atlanta natives have become one of today’s most successful rap acts. “B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)” features hyperspeed vocals and an infectious beat. The video is a kinetic whir of dancing, driving, and running set against eye-popping shades of purple and green. “Ms. Jackson” is a melodic plea to the mother of a child born out of wedlock. The highlight of the video is the way in which the cats and dogs in the house get in on the act with Dre (Andre Benjamin) and Big Boi (Antwan Patton). Both videos were directed with flair by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off), who seems to have taken inspiration from the prolific Hype Williams, the innovative rap director who helped catapult Outkast’s compatriot Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot to fame with the video for “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” The DVD includes a six-minute interview in which Dre and Big Boi discuss the making of Stankonia, the inspiration behind “B.O.B.” and “Ms. Jackson,” and their evolution as musicians and producers. –Kathleen C. Life After Tomorrow

Author: Music Lover  //  Category: Musicals on DVD

The award winning Life After Tomorrow, a film by Julie Stevens and Gil Cates, Jr., reunites more than 40 women who played orphans in the original Broadway production of Annie and reveals the highs and lows of their experiences as child actresses in a cultural phenomenon. Once the curtain came down, many found it could be a hard-knock-life, fraught with out-of-control stage mothers, separation anxiety, and worst of all, pubescent growth spurts that could find the moppets being replaced by smaller, younger editions just waiting in the wings. As one cast member in the film remarks, The younger ones are coming to take your place and you’re 12. It’s not like you are getting downsized at 50…you’re 12!. While their lives moved on, the impact of the experience remains. Features behind-the-curtain footage from the original Broadway production and performances with the re-united orphans.

John Renbourn In Concert 1990

Author: Music Lover  //  Category: Concert DVDs

John Renbourn’s unique stylistic fusion of British folk music with elements of country blues, modern jazz, ragtime, classical and pre-Renaissance music has led to his becoming one of the foremost fingerstyle guitarists performing today. John explores all the facets of his music in this 75 minute solo concert, recorded 1990 in Toronto, Canada. He plays a classic rock instrumental by Booker T. The MGS and follows this with a gospel tuned learned from a recording by the great Bahamian guitarist, Joseph Spence. Traditional Irish melodies are played as easily as a jazz composition from the South African pianist, Dollar Brand. John Renbourn is a “complete guitarist” and a highly evolved musician. This video presents a rare night which combined great guitar playing, John’s unique humor and a captivated full-house. Titles include: Sweet Potato, Medley: Abide With Me/Great Dreams From Heaven, Lord Franklin, Little Niles, Lindsay, From Sandwood Down To Kyle, Medley: The South Wind/The Blarney Pilgrim, Kokomo Blues, Medley: Lament For Owen Roe O’Neill/Mist Covered Mountains Of Home/The Orphan, Medley: Bunyan’s Hymn/I Saw Three Ships/The English Dance and Cherry.

Tony Bennett - MTV Unplugged: The Video

Author: Music Lover  //  Category: Music Videos on DVD

This blue-toned, straightforward visit with a mellow Tony Bennett is a grown-up rock video complement to the CD, with a small, cabaret-style intimacy that gives the illusion that Tony’s in the living room, singing only to us. The casual, languid Bennett style is omnipresent as Bennett croons and skats his way through some of the greats, including “Body and Soul,” “A Foggy Day,” and of course that old standby, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Old and new styles collide in the second half when Bennett introduces his guest k.d. lang, whom he adds to his list of personal bests Billie Holliday, Edith Piaf, and Andy Williams. They duet on an undistinguished version of “Moonglow” that makes us wonder if Tony might not be mistaking lang for someone else. Fortunately Elvis Costello arrives to kick things into a higher gear and as the lights dim red, Costello and Bennett heat up the track with a nice, spirited rendering of “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.” Bennett then encores with “Autumn Leaves/Indian Summer” and dedicates the whole ball of wax to Duke Ellington. It’s a smooth, practiced affair that has little sense of spontaneity, though Bennett tries hard to imbue it with his trademark throwaway ease. Of course, it helps immeasurably if you watch this entertaining DVD in full surround stereo. –Paula Nechak
